Hear from Sonya Oguzor...

During my first pregnancy, I felt overwhelmed sometimes by all that I had to do to prepare for my baby and all else motherhood had in store. I wished for a space where I could go to just relax for a minute and maybe find like minded women who were expecting as well. I found classes at a pregnancy ultrasound center outside of Detroit. It was nice but no one looked like me or could understand my concerns fully around birth. I also had hip and back discomfort.

Being a licensed Massage Therapist, I knew that I could use a massage but who would be best to see. Surely, I did not want to put my trust in the local franchise chain massage center who only worked with pregnant women once a year and felt prenatal massage was a chore rather than a honor so I suffered in silence. Well that is half true, I saught help from a family chiropractor. It helped a little but I needed muscular massage not just adjustments.

Once my baby was born, I tried going to spas but with my husband at work I had no one I trusted to watch the baby. If only there was a space for new moms I thought. I previously had a spa in my house so I figured I'd refresh my memory of prenatal and postpartum massage and take classes to be proficient in it and make my spa into a maternity Spa for Moms like me. The process to become a maternity Spa was easy, however, I had a newborn and a year later discovered I was pregnant again. It wasn't until the pandemic began that Spa Oguzor begin to get recognition as a maternity Spa. I then realized that women needed more support than a massage and went to school for doula support.

Long story short, Spa Oguzor is a Maternity Spa and doula service seeking to assist those in Detroit and Southeastern Michigan with pregnancy related pain and education around birth and postpartum. Feel free to reach out.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1: Is prenatal massage really safe?
A: Yes, for healthy people. It also depends on the body we're working with.
First the guest must understand that "pregnancy is not an illness;" and that pregnant people are not fragile creatures.
Next, the guest and MT must consider a few factors in order to determine if the massage is safe:
1)how far along the pregnancy is
2)the position the pregnant person will be in while getting a massage
3)what body parts will be massaged
4)the speed of the massage
5)the depth of the massage
6)the intensity of the massage
7)the intention of the massage and 8)the baby's growth and health.

Q2: Why do you require full payment and won't accept a deposit like other spas?
A: We require full payment to ensure our MT's get paid for their time & effort.

Q3: I've had a prenatal massage while laying on my belly, do you do that?
A: No, we provide prenatal massages side lying and or elevated/on a wedge pillow supine (face-up). Laying prone (on your belly) is NOT SAFE for Mom or baby after your first trimester.

Q4: Do you serve people that aren't pregnant?
A: Yes, we serve non-pregnant guest.  Most of our spa treatments are for those postpartum and or those not pregnant.

Q5: Do you have a physical location, or do you only travel to homes?
A: We're currently seeking a new location for our spa. For now we just travel to your home or business.

Q6: Do you massage high risk people?
A:If your pregnancy is considered high risk we will need a doctors note (must be recently written within 1 week of massage) in order to massage.
